These days, the term ‘Body of Christ’ is used commonly to describe the whole universal church—or at least the totality of churches in a given area. In the New Testament, however, it is more commonly used of individual local churches.
So Paul writes to the Corinthians: ‘Now you are a body of Christ’ (1 Cor 12:27). We might rephrase this is as, ‘You are as the physical presence of Christ…’
In plain terms, the local church was to be in Corinth what Jesus would be if he were there physically.
This has incredible implications…
